strengthens towards northern california. which means an even hotter day in your microclimate forecast. a look at how hot it's going to get in your neighborhood coming up. >> a very close call in the hills of san jose today. crews quickly pounced on a grass fire that had the potential of destroying homes there. the dry brush and hot weather this week already has them on high alert. nbc bay area's damian trhujillo >> the fire station is in the san jose foothills and it's already been busy. crews climbed this steep hill near grant ranch to knock down the flames. the department sent several local fire trucks. >> the grass is so dry here. we sent a lot of resources right away and were able to contain the fire to two acres. >> reporter: the fire department is especially worried about the

next few days with the dry brush getting drier and temperatures nearing the 90s in san jose. >> we do have a heat wave coming. there's low pressure that's m e moving. >> reporter: the department is also increasingly concerned about the fourth of july and the many illegal fireworks that traditionally light up the sky. they say this will be the image all summer long with the taller brush fueled by an el nino grass that's already dangerously dry. and ka fire is reporting more than 3,000 firefighters are battling 10 large wildfires across the state. we're live in san jose, i'm damian trujilltrujillo, nbc bay news. these are live pictures of what's being called the fish fire, burning 20 miles east of l.a., close to pasadena it the smoke in the air it this started

about noon. it is spreading very quickly. two nearby neighborhoods evacuated. it's burned 1,000 acres. one of two fires burn in the san gabriel mountains right now. this fire near sacramento, only about 10 acres, but it didn't start too long ago. it's moving towards the cal expo fair grounds. more than 250 new fires have started in the past week. more problems for the embattled oakland police department. turs out the city may have broken the rules with its decision last friday. today oakland has named another person to oversee the police department. here's what happened last friday. the city administrator became the fourth person to lead the pd in the wake of the growing series of scandals. putting her in charge may have violated state law. nbc bay area jody hernandez in oakland. this is a mess, what's the explanation tonight? >> reporter: taj, just moments

ago, the mayor issued a statement, insisting the city did not violate state law because it is a charter city which operates under a different set of rules. tonight, the mayor is clarifying exactly who is running the opd. >> after announcing three different chiefs last week, the mayor ended the week by announcing there just wouldn't be one. >> reporter: after a week of musical chiefs, a new face now running the show. accord to the city's website, acting assistant chief david downing is now run the day-to-day operations of the opd, while city leaders say city administrator sabrina landrift is overseeing the department. >> the city administrator is the one that at the end of the day has complete control of all the departments, all the chiefs report to her. >> reporter: the turmoil at the top comes as the department deals with scandal after scandal. including allegations of comm d commanders sending racist text messages to other officers and a

teenage girl allegedly had sex with more than a dozen oak land police officers. >> we're heading to where bill cosby is today. he started with one lady accusing him and wound up with 40 at the end of the day. i think it's -- the way i see it today, that's where we're headed. >> reporter: but people in oakland want stability. with so many accusations and a repeated changing of the guard, that doesn't seem to be on the horizon. >> we've got major allegations of misconduct where the public was impacted in serious cases and we need to restore stable leadership in the department. >> reporter: again tonight, the mayor is insisting nothing has changed since her announcement on friday but she is clarifying the operational and tactical decisions at the police department are being made by police commanders with the city administrator overseeing it all. that is the latest in a highly confusing story that seems to change day to day. i'm jodi hernandez in oakland,

nbc bay area news. >> jodi, thank you. confusing and embarrassing for the city. here's a little more background on deputy chief david downing who's running the day-to-day operations from what we understand. his linked in profile shows he's been with opd for 27 years, been a deputy chief since 2013. downing also had a brief stint with the concord police department. the transparency promised by the police department is in question tonight it after a report surfaced the sergeant was -- that a sergeant was arrested last year for domestic violence. talk about someone also here. sergeant steven valle has won honors and promotions during his career but the department said nothing when he was arrested last fall for making threats and committing assault with a firearm. it apparently happened during or after a domestic violence incident. it's not clear whether he fired a weapon. the d.a. declined to file charges. police say they're unable to discuss it. the arrest was revealmillied in

public records request. today, police and federal agents released partial transcripts of the 911 conversations. >> the killer, 49, and the shooter of 53 others identified himself as an islamic soldier who pledged aleanilegiance to a terror organization. >> negotiators talked with mateen during phone calls while he was inside the pulse nightclub. he told police explosives were planted. he also warned more attacks would take place in, quote, the next few days. that massacre once again triggered calls for gun control legislation. but it appears those calls are not being answered in the senate. just about an hour ago, the senate rejected four proposals that were up for a vote including one that would have restricted firearms for suspected terrorists by banning gun sales to anyone on the no fly or terror watch list. pride will go on as planned

but it may take you a little longer to get to the festivities. crowds might be even bigger and security, we know, will be tighter. this is all prompted by what happened in orlando. nbc bay area's michelle roberts is in san francisco. what were some of the decisions announced late today? >> reporter: the biggest thing is they'll be increased security all over the city but especially here at city center plaza. you'll have to go through a security checkpoint with the metal detector. they're asking you to leave all your bags at home. although they will allow small baggings. and say because of that extra security, there could be long lines to get into the festivities. >> we can't live in fear. >> reporter: riding with on bikes this weekend for pride san francisco. >> i like knowing there's more of a police presence. >> reporter: following the tragedy in orlando, there will be increased police presence. >> we'll also be using plain

clothed officers throughout the venues. >> reporter: there will be several security checkpoints set up around civics center plaza. new this year, no large bags or purses allowed in. and everyone will have to walk through a metal detector to enter. >> this extreme violence directed at our community and it has to end. >> reporter: supervisor scott wiener is calling on the lgbt community to come together in the face of terror and says the city is doing everything it can to ensure pride will be safe and welcoming environment. >> it's really tempting to curl up into a ball and to retreat when this kind of tragedy happens, but we have to do the opposite. we need to have the most celebratory and joyous pride we have ever had before. >> the city says there are no known threats to this weekend. they're also asking everybody who will be in the city to sign up for emergency alerts. sorry about that language, back to you guys. >> all right, michelle, thank

you very much. a traumatic day. some of them were allowed back into their heavily damaged apartments to collect what little they could salvage. nbc bay area's mark matthews at the corner of mission and 29th where the fire has left more than 50 homeless. >> reporter: 38 homes damaged or destroyed. six buildings heavily damaged. 57 people now without a place to stay. some of them allowed back in today to see what they've lost. for some, it was too much to bear. residents of the burned out apartments, most of them living in a single resident hotel room, didn't have a lot to start with and saturday afternoon's fire left nothing but grief. building officials escorted them in a couple at a time. alex juarez lived here with his brother. rumors of complaints of faulty

sprinklers in the sro hotel weren't true and the sprinklers were working. >> it did its job. >> reporter: the fire started in the hardware store next to the hotel. there are four apartments above. firefighters likely know where it started but they're not saying. he runs the 330 bar at 29th and miss. he has not been able to go in there. >> from what the inspectors tell us, water's everywhere. anything electric we had is toast. >> reporter: his family's owned the bar for 60 years. he says it will take a while but they will reopen. in the meantime, he's grateful for the outpouring of community support especially from his neighbors at the front porch restaurant. >> they had food out and they were serving the firefighters. try to figure out what is going on. >> reporter: the supervisor who represents this district also wants to know. he says there have been a number of big fires in the mission district. while numbers show in every

other community in san francisco, the number of fires is actually going down. we'll hear from supervisor campos coming up at 6:00. reporting, mark matthews, nbc bay area news. final preparations are being made tonight for the funeral of a fallen san jose police officer. more than 1,000 people are expected to gather for the memorial service. it will happen tomorrow. he died while on his motorcycle in a collision with a minivan last tuesday. now, tomorrow's ceremony will include a motorcade from a funeral home to the sap center in downtown san jose. the service starts at 11:00 a.m. it is open to the public. >> sorry that he lost his life for that but i guess that's the san jose police, that's what they got to go through in life. >> the katherman family plans a private service after the public memorial tomorrow. the procession will start at the

some of the students named in the letter have turned to an attorney to get some help. >> reporter: that's right, the letter was written during the last week of school june 2nd. parents now want three things. they want reassurance their kids will be safe at school. they also want the boy who alley wrote the letter to be psychologically evaluated. the lurid letter allegedly written by a 15-year-old boy at scotts valley high school lists 21 students, most of them girls, and 4 women teachers who would be fatally stabbed and sexually assaulted. >> they basically just set, uh, we looked at it, he didn't mean it, he feels really bad this will blow over. >> reporter: police investigated. >> he was held on inschool suspension. determined that would be the best course of action. that way we could monitor him for the last three days of

school in the administration building where he would be constantly supervised by school staff and down the hall from our own school resource officer. >> reporter: an attorney says an investigation started immediately. principal notified the district office. the attorney for the families says the letter may be considered a criminal act either for its threatening nature, harassment or exposing a minor to pornography. >> most likely in juvenile he would first get a psychological evaluation. it's unlikely he would be incarcerated. he would be put on probation. >> reporter: that last point, probation, that's if charges are filed and if there is a conviction. we should point out, no attack ever happened. tomorrow, the police will send their report to the district attorney for consideration. parents are seeking a restraining order against the boy. reporting live, i'm chuck coppola, nbc bay area news. a new way to put pressure on

a controversial judge. a bill board to recall judge persky who presided over the sexual assault case. the bill board in hayward west of cole door road. the national women's advocacy group is paying for the sign. the judge's sentence gave him six months in a county jail. now recall efforts with the bill board reflecting the community outrage. >> we don't believe in special sentences for privileged stanford athletes. we think that whoever you are, whether you're at stanford or whether you're an elite athlete, you should be subject to same law as everyone else. >> ultraviolet says 1.2 million people have signed the group's petition asking to remove judge persky from the bench. however legal experts stress the judge's sentence was within legal guidelines. the bill board message will appear for the next four weeks. a rock star greeting for a

when we get our summertime microclimate setup is you don't have to go too far to escape some of the heat. trivalley, it is hot. 90 degrees still in pleasanton. closer to san jose, temperatures now in the low 0s. as we move into oakland at 74 degrees. san francisco, there's some heat relead, 70. ocean beach, that's where the ocean air conditioning is, 65 degrees. marine layer is getting squished down closer to sea level so the cooler effects of the onshore winds simply not being felt inland. as you saw with humidity levels at 9% in concord. high fire danger, breezy conditions across those hilltops. notice the lack of any clouds. that's the coolant for the ocean air conditioning. the marine layer gets compressed. interior valleys don't get any benefit from onshore winds. evening forecast is warm. 70s and 80s. and then by midnight, still mid-60s in san jose.

so tomorrow morning, not much relief in terms the heat for inland location because the low cloud cover you can see there is very limited, just patchy low clouds out october coast for tomorrow morning. notice the temperatures, by the way, today, palm desert hit 126 degrees in the cochela valley. upper 90s in fresno today. notice how fresno now jumps up to about 104 in the forecast for tomorrow. so the high, at least for northern california, is going to build a little more strongly for tomorrow and that's the reason why our temperatures are going to go up another 3 to 5 degrees. san jose, mid to upper 80s. near 90 tomorrow. mid-90s, areas south of san jose. san francisco in the 70s. notice the five-day trend for san jose. another spike in temperatures. a little midweek cooling. back to 90 as we approach the weekend. san francisco, similar trend as we get to the start of the weekend. numbers rising again as high pressure tries to re-establish

city. it's over, it's over. the city of champion once again. >> it was tough to digest. lebron james and the cavaliers certainly earned. it you see the tears there, lebron on the floor. today the cavaliers returned home to thousands of screaming fans. in fact, there were a few thousand people at the around there. lebron james hoisted up that championship trophy celebrating cleveland's first title in 52 years in any sport. meanwhile, back here in the bay area, stef steph curry reflected on the tough end to the season. >> got to live with that all summer. we hope the feeling we have now will make us better as we look to get back to the stage going forward. >> a lot of free agents. a lot of decisions to deal with here for the warriors. oh, by the way, training camp opens in early october.
